Welcome to the official Dinokeng Game Reserve website

Elephant arrive in the Dinokeng Game reserve. They are settling in well and are exploring the 18 500 hectare reserve
On 22 September 2011 The Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, officially opened the Dinokeng Game Reserve. The first six of eight lion, arrived in the game reserve on Monday 19 September and Wednesday 21 September and settled in well. They were in holding boma’s for a few weeks and four of them were then released into the 18 500 hectare reserve.
Our first 10 Elephant arrived on Wednesday 26 October and this brings the planned Big 5 to 4, with the remaining Buffalo introduction to follow as soon as possible. It has been a long road to the opening with initial planning started in 2006, but obstacles have been overcome and the game reserve is moving forward positively. Buffalo, Hyena, Cheetah and more Leopard will follow shortly.
The developing Dinokeng Game Reserve (DGR) is situated in the North-East quadrant of the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The greater Dinokeng area covers approximately 281 000ha of rural land incorporating Roodeplaat, Cullinan, Rayton and open bushveld north of the Moloto Road (R573).
Dinokeng is a Blue IQ initiative established by the Gauteng Provincial Government, with the objectives of establishing a premier tourism destination close to urban Gauteng. The project aims to promote economic growth, job creation and social upliftment through conserving and developing the historical, natural and cultural heritage of the area.
The land was historically used for farming but is slowly being converted into land-uses more suited to eco-tourism. With the cooperation of the landowners in the area, local communities and government, the area is now being developed into a functioning Big 5 Game Reserve.
DGR has been financially developed by the Blue IQ Project but is managed by the Landowners Association through a section 21 company, Dinokeng Management Association. The DGR is based on a unique concept, whereby the entire reserve is made up of individually owned land. The initial startup phase, consisting of approximately 12 500ha, was increased to approximately 18 500ha in 2010 and is presently owned by approximately 271 landowners. The reserve will look to further expansion now that the game reserve has officially opened.
The DGR is not exclusively a tourism destination, but rather a social and economic core that will benefit the region. The project will have huge benefits to the local communities and will contribute to the overall improvement of the quality of life of disadvantaged rural communities.
The game reserve has five gates facilitating entrance to the reserve from a number of directions. The game reserve currently has four of the Big 5, namely Rhino, Lion, Elephant and Leopard . Landowners are looing forward to the introduction of the last of the Big 5, Buffalo, very soon.
