History
The
history of the DB5 is unique amongst protected area in South Africa. The
areas proximity to the urban hubs of Pretoria and Johannesburg, the
financial hub of Gauteng, resulted in a largely commercial farming land
use. This land use slowly changed over the years to incorporate some
eco-tourism prospects. The entire area is comprised of lands owned by
approximately 88 owners. This large stakeholder community has resulted in
a plethora of complex issues and problems to be solved.
Previously
only the Pilanesberg National Park and Nairobi National Park were situated
in such close proximity to large urban complexes, this enhances the
tourism value of the Reserve but also incorporates a number of challenges.
Further to the socio-economic requirements of the DB5 the Reserve has the
potential to greatly contribute to the regional economy.

of gateways and entrances being completed by the end of 2007. The
challenges that remain is to expand the DB5 into the eastern areas and
ultimately grow the Reserve to 125 000 ha.
